Ride of Silence 2009- Tucson

On May 20, 2009, Tucsonans gathered for the Ride of Silence in honor of those who have been injured or killed while cycling on public roadways. Over 250 people met at Reid Park for the 9-mile Ride of Silence. We traveled east on Broadway to Wilmot, south on Wilmot to 22nd Street, then west on 22nd back to Reid Park.

We all met up at 6pm for the one-hour ride. Martha Lemen from the Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC) began the event with a short speech about the history of the Ride of Silence and the importance of the bicycle community coming together to support one another and bicycle safety.

The Mass of Riders listening to Martha's speech.

The riders made some final adjustments to their bikes before they left on the ride.

With rain clouds rolling in riders traveled along Broadway escorted by the Southwest Rangers. The Southwest Rangers stopped vehicular traffic to allow the group to stay together. All participants needed to wear a helmet.

Riders cruised down Broadway on a variety of bikes ranging from comfort bikes and cruisers to racing and touring bikes all traveled in silence at less than 12 mph.

Roger and Holly rode along Broadway in their highly visible tops.

The riders returned from the silent trip to enjoy treats and give-a-ways.

Bicyclists ate Clif Bars courtesy of Clif Bar and picked up information about bike safety classes and other handouts.

Snacks were provided by the Brad Fund and Clif Bar.
